Decker's family relocated to Louisiana at the age of nine. Decker then won a regional talent contest with a rendition "I Want to Be a Cowboy's Sweetheart" from Patsy Montana. Decker lived in Georgia in the year she turned fifteen years old. She began writing songs, and was making regular visits in Nashville. Looking for an agreement, Decker visited record labels and music publishers. In 1997, she'd reached the age of 17 when a Big Yellow Dog Records rep heard her. The rep began selling her songs as well as music to a variety of artists and record labels. The moment Mercury Records president David Massey saw the demos of Decker, he sent her work to L.A. Reid head of the affiliated Island/Def Jam label group and Reid has signed her to the terms of a recording contract. Jessie James released her debut album in August 2009. It was a self-titled project. Jessie James achieved a reasonable level of success, with Wanted reaching at the Top 40 charts. Decker was a country singer who believed herself to be a traditional country musician in the past, was shocked to discover that the album wasn't promoted and focused on a mainstream audience. Decker fought with the label to gain more control over her music following two previous singles fell. Her subsequent album, Boys in the Summer, was more country oriented. Decker's album was titled Daughter of a Gypsy (or Sweet American Dreams), was dropped by Mercury following two singles that did not chart on the chart for country.
